Nepali photojournalist Narendra Shrestha is one of the winners of the 2026 World Press Photo Contest. His image, captured during the Gen Z protests in Nepal last September, which shows the Singha Durbar engulfed in flames, was selected as a joint winner in the ‘Singles’ category for the West, Central and South Asia region, alongside two other photographs. As more people build “home studios” to watch movies, has the need for sound design in Nepal’s film industry changed over the years? Nepal correspondent Girish Subedi spoke with senior sound designer and trainer Bipin Sthapit, who has been working in the industry for over three decades. The inaugural International Wellness Day has been celebrated on April 15, after Nepal's proposal to start the day was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly last month. The Federal Government has announced free R-S-V vaccinations for older Australians, in a push to better protect those most at risk from the potentially deadly respiratory virus. Laxmi Tiwari, a folk singer from Rampur in Palpa, is known for her knowledge of traditional songs from Nepal’s Gandaki region. She performs a range of culturally significant genres popular within Brahmin and Chhetri communities, including Magal, Uwali, Ratyauli, Balan and Silok. Recently gaining wider recognition as “Tiwari Aama” after her songs garnered engagement on YouTube, she is also known for spontaneously composing and performing her own lyrics. Her songs reflecting the lives of Nepali migrants have also resonated with audiences beyond Nepal.
